Your driver-guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Marrakech to start your 5 days desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga. You will drive through the scenic High Atlas Mountains, crossing the famous Tizi n’Tichka pass. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. The first stop will be Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you’ll explore the iconic kasbah, renowned for its ancient architecture and its role as a backdrop in many famous films. Afterward, visit the Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate, where movies like “Gladiator” and “Lawrence of Arabia” were filmed. You will spend the night in Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Desert.”
Depart from Ouarzazate and head towards the Draa Valley, famous for its palm groves and traditional Berber villages. Continue through the desert landscapes of Nkoub and Tazarine, small towns rich with culture and history, before reaching Alnif. The drive offers a glimpse into Morocco’s rural life, with scattered villages and mountain views. As you reach Merzouga, you’ll be greeted by the sight of the impressive sand dunes of Erg Chebbi. Enjoy a camel ride through the dunes to reach your luxury desert camp, where you’ll experience a traditional Berber dinner under the stars.
Spend the day exploring the unique desert surroundings of Merzouga. Visit the Berber nomads living in traditional tents and learn about their way of life in the harsh desert environment. You’ll also visit nearby villages, such as Khamlia, known for its Gnawa music. Discover the fascinating customs and traditions of the desert people as you explore the area. In the evening, return to Merzouga village, where you’ll stay overnight in a comfortable hotel.
Leave the desert behind and drive towards Rissani, a traditional town with a vibrant market, where you can experience the authentic atmosphere of local trade. Continue to Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops, then head through the small town of Tinjdad before arriving at the Todra Gorges. These towering cliffs provide an excellent photo opportunity and are a popular spot for rock climbing. After exploring the gorge, travel to the beautiful Dades Valley, where you’ll spend the night surrounded by lush greenery and stunning rock formations.
On the final day, you’ll travel through the scenic Dades Valley, also known as the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs. Pass through the Rose’s Valley, famous for its annual rose festival and rosewater products. Stop in Skoura, a picturesque oasis lined with palm groves and ancient kasbahs. From there, you’ll cross back over the High Atlas Mountains, enjoying the dramatic scenery on the way back to Marrakech, where your 5-day desert adventure comes to an end.
The journey from Marrakech to Merzouga takes approximately 9 hours.
