In Morocco, many languages are spoken. The two official languages are Arabic and Berber (Tamazight). Most people speak Moroccan Arabic, called Darija, in daily life. It is a dialect and does not have a formal written form, but it can be written with Arabic letters. Street signs are usually in Classical Arabic. French is widely used in business, government, and schools, and is often called the “unofficial” third language. In the north, Spanish is also spoken because of Morocco’s closeness to Spain. English is becoming more popular, especially among young educated people.
